Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in San Antonio, Texas. The site includes an historic church structure, built in 1768 with local Tufa limestone block and featuring hand-sculpted decorative limestone elements carved by master Spanish stone masons. The structure remains an active Catholic church and holds regular mass as well as special services throughout the year.

The Mission’s condition is continually monitored by Ford Powell Carson Architects & Planners and the exterior has undergone several restoration and preservation projects throughout its history. Upon Acton Partners’ engagement by FPC, the roof of the building was at least 40 years old and consisted of a spray foam roof with multiple layers of foam and waterproof coatings.

APC performed a field review of the existing conditions, including those resulting in water damage to the interior plaster and decorative paint finishes, and designed a full roof replacement for the Church and main dome alongside exterior masonry repairs designed by FPC.

To address durability and freeze-thaw issues experienced on another Mission project, APC developed a modified waterproofing and plaster design for the main dome to accommodate differential movement and temperature fluctuations and provide watertightness while maintaining the historic, hand-troweled finish appearance.

The project was successfully completed by Pugh Constructors and their artisan trade partners in 2023.
